Information for Parents: As you know, the Internet isn't always a Kid Friendly Zone and not just because of the more obvious dangers such as pornography, unsupervised chat and commercial interests. The audience for most websites is, of course, adults and the language is written appropriately. These Kids Search Engines will often produce results that are more child friendly, in a language they can understand. Please use them as a guide only and, as always, parents should monitor what their children are viewing on the web. As these Search Engines are primarily American in content and perspective, searching for Australian content will be more easily achieved by using one of the General Australian Search Engines.
Australian Search Engines
General Search: Alta Vista Aust | ANZWERS | Beyond the BlackStump | Directory Australia.Com | Google | Kangaroo.Com.Au | Mooter | Web Wombat
Directories: Australian Environmental Portal | australia.gov.au | Possum Pages | WhitePages.Com.Au | YellowPages.Com.Au
Sunshine Coast Links: Maroochy Shire Council | My sunshinecoast | SunZine | Tourism Sunshine Coast | University of the Sunshine Coast | Sunshine Plaza
Information for Parents: As their names suggest, these Search Engines provide links that are more specific to Australia. You will soon work out which ones are good for specific applications. Note that NOT ALL of these Search Engines have Australia as their default "search target". For example, you may have to hit a button to specify whether you want to search within Australia, New Zealand or The World. Some of the search engines are highly customisable providing the user with links to information about their local area (including Weather and Entertainment). In general the more features and graphics in the Search Engine Page, the longer it takes to download. For other Australian Search Engines than the ones listed below, simply go into any one of these search engines and type "Australian Search Engines" into the search box.
Other Search Engines
General Search: Alta Vista | BBC Search | Lycos | Northern Light | Yahoo | Wise Nut
Meta Search: Dogpile | Metacrawler | Vivisimo
Information for Parents: "Meta" Search Engines are Search Engines that search other search engines and they are very powerful. Take the time to get to know how each Search Engine works. Once you've found one that really suits you, you can make it your Home Page (or at least add it to your favourites). |

Woombye School is one of three schools that I support as well as being involved in the parent program, MYCP (Managing Young Children Program) at Nambour School. I am at Woombye one day a week, usually Tuesdays. Prior to becoming a guidance officer in 1993 I was a primary teacher. After my guidance training I continued studies and became a registered psychologist in 1994.
My role involves supporting, children, parents and staff. The areas of my focus include:
- Working with the Department of Child Safety in relation to child protection matters.
- Supporting children who are in the care of the Department of Child Safety.
- Conducting protective behaviours programs.
- Assessment and diagnosis of children with an intellectual impairment.
- Liaising with specialists, parents and teachers to help identify and support students with disabilities.
- Working closely with the Learning Support team and administration to discuss strategies to help students with learning difficulties.
- Assessment of intellectual skills to gain in depth information as to factors that may be contributing to learning difficulties.
- Counselling children. The approach I use depends on the age of the child. At times I use puppets, drawings, plasticine, and stories. My favourite puppet is
- Monkey who has been with me for nearly ten years.
- Counselling parents particularly in relation to parenting. This is my passion as I believe that the most important relationship children can have is the one with their parents.
- Working as part of the District Trauma Response Team.
- Referring on to support agencies. Due to time constraints and the nature of my job it is not possible for me to provide regular ongoing support to particular children or parents.
I consider myself fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such a great team of dedicated teachers, administrators and support staff whose goal is to help children develop an interest in life long learning. |

Soon after the discovery of gold at Gympie in 1867, a Cobb and Co. coach route was established, passing over the hill on which our school now stands. A changing camp was necessary, so the settlement of Cobb's Camp came into being. As the population increased, a school was needed, so Cobb's Camp School, No. 476 was established, the opening day being 17 August, 1885. This very small school grew with the arrival of more settlers, and the advent of the railway line from Landsborough to Woombye. Woombye was an aboriginal name for the black myrtle which grew in the scrub, its straight, tough stems being used by the coach drivers for whip handles. Another source attributes the name "Woombye" as an aboriginal word meaning "the place of the black snake".
As more children attended the school, the present library building now known as Cobbs Cottage was built, and then a separate infants building was erected at right angles to it. As the years have gone by, so the school has progressed with more buildings being added, some wooden, two demountables, and later, a modern brick building. During the early fifties, the scheme to convert a rather steep hill into a series of flat terraced playing areas, evolved, and so we now have the playground of which Woombye School is justifiably proud. Also during this era the first school transport came into being, a taxi bringing in the West Woombye children. Today a fleet of modern buses provides easy access from the surrounding area.
There have been many teachers, but perhaps the name of J.T. Wilson is more remembered, as during his span of office from 1899 to 1926 he helped the fruit industry for which Woombye is famous, by being instrumental in getting the first fruit train organized.
Another addition to our school is the modern preschool erected during the seventies, and serving the younger children. Many trees have been planted over the years and add to the beauty of the spacious grounds.
The nineties saw the development of a new building program to cater for enrolment growth and to ensure that our ovals remained available as play areas. Major building re-development occurred with the sale of B block, relocation of C block and construction of a new covered area and amenities block as well as a new administration and teaching block (H Block).
